04 Jun Nutrition in Emergencies Short Course, 4-15 June 2012, Beirut, Lebanon
As part of a global initiative to increase capacity in emergency nutrition, the American University of Beirut (AUB), in collaboration with the Institute of Child Health (part of University College London) will be running an 11-day course in Nutrition in Emergencies course in Beirut from the 4th to the 15h June, 2012. This course provides a unique opportunity to strengthen organizational capacity to respond effectively in emergencies.

The past decade has seen a surge in attention to supporting countries affected by and recovering from conflict. A parallel growth has also occurred in the number of professionals working in the fields of humanitarian, development and post-conflict recovery policymaking and practice. They are faced with a myriad of challenges associated with contexts transitioning from conflict to peace, yet rarely have the opportunity to reflect upon the critical concepts, practical challenges and policy dilemmas involved in supporting effective transitions.
The third Advanced Course on Conflict, Crisis and Transitions offered by the Humanitarian Policy Group and the Post-War Reconstruction and Development Unit at the University of York aims to facilitate learning and guided reflection on these crucial issues.
The course will bring together mid-career and senior professionals in York for one week each summer. Course participants will engage in a participatory learning process that combines lectures with small group discussions and exercises, with the possibility of publishing an analytical piece.

FRAMEWORK OF HUMANITARIAN AID
Objective: To provide participants with thorough knowledge of the humanitarian sector and issues at stake: stakeholders, systems, coordination mechanisms, legal and ethical framework, Q&A initiatives and applications relating to programme management.
Upon completing the training, participants will have developed the capacity to :
- Identify the different categories of actors, mandates within the sector and how they work together
- Analyse essential challenges facing the humanitarian community
- Identify the mainstream approaches/initiatives relative to the issue of quality and accountability within the sector
- Describe, in detail, the concept of accountability and its application in the humanitarian sector
- Identify and analyse the main interagency quality initiatives
- Identify ways and challenges of applying quality standards in programme management
- Identify and analyse the main interagency accountability initiatives
- Identify ways and challenges of applying the contents of the quality intiatives in programme management
- Describe the main rules and principles of legal frameworks of humanitarian action
- Explain how protection is understood in humanitarian action

Strengthening Policy and Practice: meeting the challenges of working in complex environments is designed to draw on the experience and practice of participants, working in development, humanitarian aid or peacebuilding to influence internal policies and programmatic approaches. The course will identify how organisations can strive to balance their organisational mandate with the demands of working in complex and rapidly changing political contexts.
Course aims
The course will enable participants to contribute to developing constructive organisational and programmatic policies that will guide practical responses in the development, humanitarian and peacebuilding fields. It will draw on the experience of participants and tutors to examine the key issues that are emerging from field-based work.
